Chapter 7
It was a good thing Liza had been around the block a time or three, or she might have been utterly shocked by the word that escaped Max as he abruptly drew away and reached in his back pocket for his phone.
“I’m sorry,” he said, meeting her gaze before he pressed the talk button and answered. “Max.”
He’d stopped for a cell phone call? That might have ticked her off except that it suddenly struck her passion-clouded mind that he probably received calls from only one place or person on that line. Just as she had always known it was an editor when her business cell had rung. There were some calls you didn’t ignore.
Just another of those things that had put a damper on her romantic life. He was listening intently and looking more serious by the minute, so she sat up, took her legs off his lap and adjusted her shirt and bra.
He didn’t say much, just muttered agreement into the phone. She went to get the coffeepot, sniffed it and decided to reheat it.
As she was starting it, she heard Max enter the kitchen behind her. “Coffee?” she asked, feeling unusually nervous and reluctant to look at him. Maybe one of these days she needed to learn how to say no to Max. Because it occurred to her she was rolling over entirely too easily to his advances. Before she’d always made men wait. Wanted to get to really know them. Not that that caution had saved her much grief evidently.
“Sure,” he said.
Something in his tone forced her to turn and look at him. “Bad news?” she asked, ignoring a sudden thumping of her heart.
“Maybe. My handler says it appears somebody has found out who I really am.”
She studied him, took in the angles and planes of his face, the way his icy blue eyes looked almost sharp and the way the corners of them seemed tight. “Max?”
“Yeah?”
“How could they get from whatever alias you used to your real name? I mean, wouldn’t that connection be even more buried than you are here?”
“I thought I was pretty well buried here,” he said, one corner of his mouth lifting humorlessly. “You penetrated this ID.”
“But your old— What do you call them anyway, the group you were infiltrating?”
“Subs. Subjects.”
“They didn’t know you were a lawyer, did they? I mean, that’s the trail I followed, and your guys almost had me dead-ended.”
“I don’t know,” he said flatly. “They were supposed to think I went to jail with the others to await trial. Those we arrested have been kept separate. It’s the usual way to protect people like me. Somebody must have figured out I’m not in jail.”
“But even then, it’s not like the ATF publicly lists its agents. Do they?”
“No.” He shook his head. “But I think I told you these guys have got one hell of a hacker. I suppose they figured they were busted by an agent, not just someone from a neighboring town.
